(Johnson City, Tenn.) – It is only natural that an advertising and marketing agency that has built a national reputation on creativity has become the sponsor of a competition among young artists. Creative Energy announced today that it would be the main sponsor of the 2014 Urban Art Throwdown during Johnson City’s Blue Plum Festival (June 6-7).
The 4th annual Urban Art Throwdown will feature the best aerosol graffiti artists in the southeastern region and will only be rivaled by battles in larger metro areas. The competitors will craft thematic art on large canvases and are judged on their creative execution and thematic approach to the murals. It is a major draw of spectators during the largest downtown Johnson City arts and music festival of the year.
“It is one of the most anticipated celebrations of art during the Blue Plum Festival,” said Creative Energy President Tony Treadway. “Our company spent nearly 15 years as a member of the downtown Johnson City business community and was an early supporter of Blue Plum. Our sponsorship was an irresistible opportunity to support young artistic talent.”
The event was created by the Keep Johnson City Beautiful organization within city government. “The Throwdown stresses the difference between graffiti and permissioned art,” said Eva Hunter, the director of Keep Johnson City Beautiful. “Graffiti is not a serious problem for Johnson City, but we want to demonstrate the value of art on a canvas compared to it being shared on concrete or brick.”
Fashioned after the Estria Battle in Los Angeles, the Urban Art Throwdown will be located on Roan Street between Market and Buffalo Streets. It will offer an $800 first prize for the artwork judged to be best. A second place prize of $400 and third place prize of $200 will also be offered.
Artists interested in entering the competition should contact Hunter at 423-979-6318 or via e-mail at email@example.com. Registration for entrants begins at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 6. Competition will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday and will continue on Saturday from 3 until 7 p.m. The winning entries will be announced Saturday night at 8.
